Tasmania is unquestionably the nation’s premier sparkling wine region. The island’s pristine environment, cool climate and rich soils combine to create ideal growing conditions for naturally elegant, intensely flavoured and aromatic wines, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the region’s most renowned varieties. While Tasmania’s first commercial vineyard plantings date back to 1865, most were short lived. There has been a resurgence since the late 1970s, and there is a real sense that this extraordinary winegrowing region is only just beginning to realise its full potential.
